Midwood is cheaper than Bed-Stuy, but I didn't say it was cheap. There's not really housing that many people would consider cheap anywhere in the city these days. You're right that Midwood in most situations it's a slightly longer commute into the city.

There's also Sunset Park and Borough Park.

Try looking around Zillow for listings at 2K and under and comparing.
Kensington does border Ditmas Park though, which has a lot of yuppie stuff

Perhaps because it was so bad before it’s made for easily accessible areas to develop new buildings. Several of the new buildings were former empty lots or abandoned buildings. I don’t dispute that other thoroughfares are nicer but to say you’re unaware of the changes on Gates, and how prevalent they are, means you’ve not actually been on it recently. I agree. I've visited an acquaintance on Gates (Black female teacher) who owns a lovely condo with her own outdoor space and the B52 is right outside. She's about 5 minutes from Clinton Hill.

Default Bed Stuy Bushwick border

Yes, I would recommend living in that area. In general, the part of Bed Stuy that borders Bushwick is now packed with artsy types, Pratt students, and all kinds of bohemians. Lots of street art. Really good food. Brownstones... And unusually many community gardens. And I agree with the comment here about crime. The crime levels are actually fairly similar in that part of Bed Stuy, Bushwick and East Williamsburg. And the J/M/Z line is way less crowded (and much cleaner) than the A/C.

Both limestone and pre-war brick are superior material to brownstone.

I know there are lots of row houses in Kensington.

But I believe there are also some brownstones there as well, even if the majority of houses are not brownstones
