for anyone interested in self defense techniques and the issues you can have legally i recommend some of the books , videos , or even courses if you can at lethal force institute run by famed instructor massad ayoob .
a good book is THE TRUTH ABOUT SELF PROTECTION ...
he runs through all the issues with things like pepper spray , mace , hand weapons , etc .
most carry lots of myth
here is his professional view on pepper spray and civilian stun guns .
Ayoob is a good writer with common sense approaches. I was reading his articles in G & A in the late 1980s already.
he not only is the premier instructor to the military and law enforcement but today he is the most respected authority on self defense in the court room ..
his LETHAL FORCE INSTITUTE is the finest training course in the country .
he is the number 1 authority on self defense tactics and training .
if he warns you about being over confident with pepper spray you can take that to the bank
discretion is the better part of valor . you need to know when you are out gunned and plan differently . .
even when you are out gunned , not taking the challenge can be the best course of action , if avoidable ..
when we did our training at one of the most well known facilities in the world , they taught us to take a matchbook and wrap a bunch of ones around it with a ten on top and put a rubber band on it .
those can fly pretty far ...
the strategy called for trying to buy the bad guys off ... here buy some beers and have a party , and throw it as far as you can .... they most likely will go after the bills giving you a chance to get away ,.the story ends there . you likely saved 50k in legal fees .
but if not it certainly will buy you time to deploy a firearm as they look away ......
it looks good in court or to the DA that you even tried buying them off and they left you no alternative .
so sometimes walking away is the smartest option where you can and that has nothing to do with cowardliness. in most street situations it is never black or white , only different shades of grey
This tactic reminds me of carrying a decoy wallet. A wallet with a bunch of ones with a larger bill, and expired library cards or similar. Its common with tourists to some regions.
Carry it and hope you don’t have to use it. Regardless of whether things turn out perfectly with its employment all of the time, I’d rather have it in me than not if in a shady area.
