For once I agree with this woman. If you see some animal attacking someone unprovoked you should try to help the victim, if possible. There are just way too many angry and deranged people on the streets just looking for an altercation. These sick bastards need to be taught a lesson. Maybe a pipe across the face would teach them a lesson.
I’m kind of the same way. I think citizens should intervene in some way if they witness violence. That’s not always a terribly safe or practical option, but I think that should basically be a human norm, if it’s not already seen that way.
She suggested that witnesses step into the middle of a “hate crime or incident” and engage directly with the person who is being targeted by asking a question like, “What time is it?”
Many people won't help strangers regardless of what state or city they are in or what the laws are.
A lot of people only care about people they personally know.

There are many natural reactions. Doing something violent to begin with could be called a "natural reaction".
Anything could be labeled that and we have the full spectrum going on from the perpetrator on one end, the hero on the other end trying to stop it

Absolutely not, and more because of the legal ramifications SHE and her ilk have ensured someone who looks like me will face, even if intervening against a 100% clear cut crime in progress. The original instigator will absolutely face less punishment than I will as a vigilante.
I wouldn't consider for even one second risking myself to stop a crime in NYC. In fact, in my recent subway travels for my new job, I've seen many. I either walk away or cautiously observe to judge whether I need to take defensive actions.
My late husband was a Ranger, a Green Beret, and he was pretty good at throwing a football, too. He would have a weapon, maybe keys, find another, and drop someone without killing them or causing brain damage and not be harmed in the process. Your average citizen isn't capable of that.
you see a crime occurring or has just occurred.
Do you call the police?
For instance. You are several floors up from street level in your apartment.
You get up at 2 am to go to the bathroom or are already up and you hear a some voice on the street, a slight commotion but it's short and not that loud. You look down from your window to the sidewalk and someone is getting mugged.
You are confident you have not been seen from down below.
Did you call the police?
You are in a store. You see somebody steal a piece of jewelry or a watch. It looks like it could be a $50 item or maybe $100 and the person that did it is still hanging around looking at other things.
Do you alert an employee?
My taxes pay for policing.
The day my property taxes take a turn in the opposite direction
is the day I'll consider what Chirlane McCray wishes...........
Until then Chirly..........you can kiss.............................

Then the prosecutor would be on TV talking about how a violent Army vet played vigilante stopping a crime that amounted to "finding bread for their family".
