How do new yorkers afford to live there? What kind of jobs do you have? do you own a home or rent? what are rent prices like?
I am just wondering because my husband and I (along with our two children) would LOVE to move to NYC but don't think we could afford it.

I make $45k yr as a public sector bureaucrat of sorts, and pay $800/mo for a bedroom in a decent sized 3-bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor of a walk-up in Upper Manhattan. I have access to the roof deck if I want to have people over in nice weather.

New Yorkers pay for living here, not for amenities. If you value a big house with a 2-car garage, central air, garbage disposal, dishwasher, etc, you can obviously get that much cheaper in say Houston or Atlanta. You don't have to have a car here though, which cuts down on the significant cost of insurance, payment, and gas.

I'm a senior systems programmer and I rent a spacious one-bedroom apartment in the Northeast Bronx at $800/month. Like the previous poster, I don't own a car either and take the subway to work in Manhattan, which saves hundreds of dollars a month right off the bat. Rent prices are dependent on where you want to go. You'll very likely see higher rent prices in Manhattan as it's the city's epicenter.

Think I found the cheapest rent payer in the city! Good for you! That's crazy cheap even by walkup/Share standards. That's like Queens price. Where do you live??

As for the OP I work in Marketing as a Brand Manager. My rent is close to $3000 but I can't complain because I am on a premium block on the UES.

It all depends on your income.. we need to know what is your household income first because the answers will all vary.

I work for MTA as a tower operator (it's sort of like air traffic control, except that I move trains instead of planes). Last year, I earned $55,000--I worked some overtime during the course of the year--and I manage quite well in Brooklyn. I own a co-op apartment...but not a car. You may hear people claim otherwise, but you do not need a car in NYC.

Public School teacher, paying $1,000 for a true (but small) one-bedroom in an elevator building in Inwood (upper Manhattan).

Thanks! I was just curious. I feel like we would need to make 200k a year to make it there but I see that is not the case

Everyone says they think the deal I got is the best they've heard. I pay $750 a month for my my own spacious 1 bedroom apartment in Astoria, Queens that's in really good condition. My landlord says he doesn't want to rip people off like other landlords in the area. He's a really nice guy. I make 55k, so I manage to save a lot with my lower rent.

I said this in the other thread, but I don't think you saw it. If you don't mind me asking, whereabouts in Astoria are you lodging for only $750?
