Interesting perspective regarding the benefits of remote learning from some parents.

https://ny.chalkbeat.org/2021/6/17/2...on-nyc-schools

For the first time in almost a decade, Bronx mom Lourdes Jibodh did not receive a letter from her son’s school saying that his promotion to the next grade level was in doubt.

Instead, her 17-year-old son Christian Camacho has been performing well academically while learning online during the pandemic. The junior at Antonia Pantoja Preparatory Academy struggles with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, making it difficult for him to focus, especially in a crowded classroom with all kinds of distractions.

Remote learning proved to be a boon for Camacho, and his mom is not ready to give it up. Jibodh is part of a vocal group of parents in the Bronx who are infuriated at city leaders for failing to engage them in planning for the upcoming school year, which they say should include an option for remote learning.

“It’s not Christian’s ADHD that is failing him, it’s the inequity and large class sizes that exist in the schools,” said Jibodh, adding that her son’s grades have gone from barely passing to C’s, B’s and even some A’s.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has remained steadfast in his support of in-person learning over virtual learning, but when he announced last month that all students, teachers, and staff would return to in-person learning beginning Sept. 13, the move caught New York City families — the majority of whom were fully remote this year — by surprise.

While many parents in areas with decent schools might welcome a return to physical school, the schools in the Bronx are often terrible. Large class sizes, poorly maintained builings, badly behaved students (that are often the spawn of badly behaved parents) make it so thay the only reason why parents in the Bronx send their kids to these schools is out of necessity in order to maintain a job.

That's because we(NYC teachers) were forced from on high to skew all the grades so that nobody failed anything during the pandemic. ...even those who were absent from remote classes all the time. No failures allowed. We were forced to literally fabricate some grades out of nothing and give others grade boosts that weren't really warranted. Resistance was futile.
The grades for the 2020/2021 year are total BS and nobody gets held back, even those jerks who occasionally showed up remotely only to intentionally disrupt.
This is not any kind of an indication of success of remote learning.....actually just the opposite.

It's over and out for me after tomorrow. Watched in horror as the NYC education system sank more and more every single year . Can't blame it all on DeBlasio either because it sank just as much every year under Bloomberg and Giuliani. A slow sink...year after year after year ....with clowns running the show. They took a once near perfect system and systematically dismantled it.

I think this merits it's own thread if you feel like starting one.
I would like to hear what you think are solutions. First, if more students were failed for the 2020/2021 year
what would be the consequences of that
and if the education system was near perfect before and has gotten progressively worse going all the way back to Giuliani who started in 1994 up to the present what are the polices or conditions in your opinion that have gone wrong? Any good there articles about this?

Thanks for confirming. I just don't get how people aren't seeing and understanding this. Your child who can barely read and fails everything in class is suddenly doing great and you're willing to just buy that?!?! I'm sorry that they have ruined your profession.

Agreed, I would like to see a new thread on this
