Excellent column. Had not thought about this before, but I suspect it is why NY will not enact economically crippling measures like indoor mask mandates now.

How is wearing a mask indoors "economically crippling?"

Because the need to do creates a valid excuse for office workers to demand to keep working from home em mass, and not return to offices.

Bingo, which means even more restaurants and shops the workers frequent during the business day FAIL.

It is going to come down to no more mandates or no NYC economy coming back. Mutually exclusive choice.

Aside from what other people said, it would shut down bars again

The progressives who worship at the feet of the CDC will not let go of the power that Covid-19 gave them. Jamie Dimon, David Solomon and James Gorman and other NYC based CEOs had better pay attention to what's really going on here. The CDC, NYS and NYC can change the rules and make up new rules as they go along. For the CDC, NYS and NYC the pandemic is a long-term jobs program. All firms based in NYC would be smart to run out their Manhattan leases and look for minimum amounts of space in the surrounding suburbs or other less densely populated areas. Everybody back to WFH with occasional in person meetings far away from densely populated pandemic prone NYC.

A indoor-mask mandate is an insult to persons like myself who are fully vaccinated.

And will be the final blow for the entire restaurant business in NYC too. The on and off mask rules will tell restaurant owners that their long-term prospects in NYC are very bad. I think the smart ones already know that and are acting accordingly. Patrons will give up and just do take-out or cook at home more. Most restaurants can't survive on take-out alone. They still have high rents and other bills to pay every month. Even restaurants which own their buildings have big bills every month.

It's crazy how much of my initial suspicions came true over the last year and a half...

But wait, it’s not over yet.

I’m actually surprised that the banks could buy Cuomo on this, someone bigger must be running things.
It would be hilarious to think USA government has ideas of their own. It’s a pay to play system.
