People across New York state have opened their mailboxes in the last few weeks to find a nasty surprise waiting in the form of unseasonably high electric bills.

Governor Kathy Hochul has since called for Con Edison to reform its billing practices, and regulators at the Public Service Commission (PSC) say the utility company needs to better prepare its energy reserves – and its customers – for times when prices spike.

But that doesn’t immediately help the many New Yorkers who are suddenly seeing bills two or three times higher than usual for the winter months. These uncertainties paired with the complex nature of New York’s energy utilities has left ratepayers upset by the unexpected bills, confused about why this happened, and what can be done about it.

Here are some answers...
Huh? How about instead of "reforming billing practices" she (and other woke democratic brethren) instead quit it with the aggressive green agenda and start drilling for more nat gas? Upstate New York sits on one of the largest shale deposits in the world, literally on top of pure energy gold. If they drilled like Pennsylvania does, we'd not only have cheap, relatively low carbon energy, but also could export that gas and reduce the horrendous, bloated debt of NYS.

Of course what am I talking about, only in a dream would that ever happen in this woke-to-the-core dystopia of New York.

Not in NY, but my propane bill for 4280sq ft was $5. My electric went up $31 due to electric space heater though.

That works out to roughly $1.987 per cu.ft. of gas.
Gas is billed per THERM, which is very close to 100 cubic feet of methane.

The temps are a bit below the average for the month, but my bill rose another $50 or so.

Be patient, it won't be long before Con-Ed starts blaming Putin for the energy price increases.
