"Unlike, well, every single one of you, I know exactly why people like this woman unfortunately end up ignored by their families."
Sure, dude, none of us have personal experience with mentally ill people in our families. Only a wannabe soldier who got to throw his weight around with vulnerable people could possibly know.
”That is not stopping more and more women from choosing this kind of life though.”
Ask all the women whose husbands left them when they got cancer or similarly debilitating illness, or when one of their kids turned out to be special needs. It's a shockingly high percentage. No guarantee a spouse wouldn't have left this woman, who was clearly difficult to deal with in her illness, at the very least.
A good spouse, any gender, is worth their weight in gold. A bad husband will suck you dry of time, money, and energy and leave you impoverished anyway. More women are choosing not to get married because they don't need to be babysitting an adult child on top of the actual ones. Men as a whole haven't really adjusted to a world where women don't have to stay married to them because they can't earn a living on their own and thus they have to bring something to the table besides the promise of a paycheck. The difficulty of treating the person you profess to love as an actual equal is beyond too many. It'll work itself out in a few generations, though.
Agree with everything. However, I will also not be surprised if we have a large percentage of these very unhappy, depressed, and lonely cat ladies with an existential crisis in the next 30 years. It is all fine and dandy not needed a partner or kids when you are relatively young and healthy, but at some point domesticated animals are not enough to keep a person happy, especially in older age.

By the time they realize that its a bit late. That alone will get your metal state slip sliding away.

Why are you mentioning spouses? That is irrelevant to the discussion as the homeless woman was not married nor was there any mention of her having a romantic relationship in the news articles. The only relationship she cherished was with her cats. File this under crazy cat lady. There's actual proof that the spores in cat poop can make people crazy over time from inhalation.
Toxoplasma gondii, a brain parasite carried by our feline companions that infects roughly one in three people. Scientists have long hypothesized that T. gondii plays a role in mental illness, including schizophrenia.

I don’t doubt that your family has experience dealing with mentally ill relatives.
