was a drugs and prostitution corner prior to the mid 90's but it has been cleaned up. There still may be a bit of a problem with prostitution on 48th over by 10th at certain times of the day but overall the area is far better and it is no longer an area people avoid

There's some of that on 8th Ave. around 42nd - 48th. Trannys/hookers/crackheads usually hanging out by those seedy XXX DVD rental places. I walk down 8th almost every day and it's sickening. I heard about XXX peep shows and hookers all over Times Square in the 70s...I wonder why they haven't eradicated all of them since most have left the area.
where exactly do you see these people, because I've seen maybe one hooker around 43-44th but none north of that. the dvd stores do look seedy, but they're nothing compared to those awful xxx bookstores you'd see in the 70's

The OP's post was dated 9/6 and he was coming for a one week trip. Hopefully he didn't encounter that solitary hooker you referenced. Perhaps the OP will let us know how his trip went.

You are so right! I remember Times Square in the late 70's and it wasn't pleasant. The entire area has undergone incredible changes.
bookstores were the lowest of the low. You'd glance inside them from the street and see loads of mags filed in the walls. The types of people who hung around these places were atrocious back then. Those DVD places were put in to keep the adult entertainment business alive but make the area more hospitable. It seems to have worked because I'm now able to walk down 8th Ave and feel safe.
attack on innocent pedestrians in the underground passageway at 42 street and 8th Avenue in the fall of 1979, innocent people were beaten and robbed. I will never forget that one, in those days 42 street was so bad it's blight extended over to 6th Avenue. The corner of 42 street and 6th was almost as bad as the avenues to the west
Now the worst thing you can say about Times Square is that it's lacking in character
