There is a DSNY thread here on the main NYC page that would gladly answer your question if you don't have time to read through the 700 pages. They are very helpful and share a lot of info on this topic.

anyway, yeah, i hear the job has great benefits, lots of OT, and one can learn it quickly with minimal training.

They're usually given every 4 years. Last exam was in '07 so expect the next one to roll around '11. Factors such as fiscal cuts can delay this and other high demand jobs, i.e. firefighter, thus making the span even longer to apply.

buzz around the garage is that the district "scorecard" has been going down. cleaning was cut across the board so something was bound to suffer. ye olde 11-7 or 12-8 truck used to hit these places when the basket was full. now not doing it until the 4-12 shift makes the corners awful. and when the 4-12 cant get it done, you end up with a hopper-full worth of garbage at each corner for the dayline to take care of. it makes for a miserable day. its a never ending circle.
