We are moving to NYC next summer and have a daughter who will be a junior in high school. She will try to get into an art specialized public high school, but if she's not accepted, we need to have options. Our research has found that there are no "zoned" public high schools in Manhattan - is this true? If not, are the specific areas we should try to rent in the city? If it is true, any recommendations of areas in Brooklyn that have good public schools? We can spend around $3,500/month in rent.

You're correct that high schools in New York City are not zoned. Rising freshmen create a list of schools they'd like to attend, based on a number of factors -- their personal interests, courses offered, location, etc. -- and then cross their fingers and hope they get assigned to one of their top choices. As you know, some schools require an entrance exam of some type (could be academic, could be artistic), but the majority of schools don't.

There used to be zoned "default" high schools, whatever happened to that?

As someone said LaGuardia is an excellent school, not sure if they take transfer students.

They still have zoned schools and to go to schools outside of your zone you usually need to take a test, audition, join a special program.
For example, I was zoned for Sheapshead High School, but I wanted to go to Lincoln High School so I joined the Veternary Science program in order to attend Lincoln HS.
The whole process was quite overwhelming for a 13 y/o. We got this huge book with every NYC high school in it and we had to pick 3 of them.

Hunter College High School is another one for which a test needs to be taken, but it's excellent.

Man, forgot about that one, although they were my school's division rivals!

I'd pick that school in a heartbeat!
