Still generally true. Rare, very rare situations in questionable buildings and/or a situation involving significant tenant tradeoffs sometimes allow for the 600 sq ft one bedroom.

One trade-off being the hefty broker's commission, since almost all apartments in that range are going to be controlled by agents for the sub-$2k price point for a 1BR in Manhattan proper.

One can hope for a $1500 one bedroom, but there are so many people paying that now to live with a roommate, I'm sure they'll be taken instantly. I search the listings daily for bargains and have not found anything.

Thanks for all your advice. Based on comments here and elsewhere, the areas that are looking hopeful are:
- Hell's Kitchen/Midtown West
- Murray Hill
- Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill
- Fort Greene
- Astoria

How do these areas differ, particularly with regards to my initial criteria?

I agree that barring a serious plunge in prices, you're not likely to find something you'd be happy with in Manhattan in this price range. I would expect that parts of Queens along the N or R lines (which both stop at 49th/7th) would be a better commute than anything in Brooklyn. As Henna mentioned, Astoria does seem like an obvious choice given the type of "scene" you're looking for. Good restaurants, very mixed population but a ton of young people, and Astoria Park's not bad. Rents there have become a bit high for my taste, but even so, a 1BR or maybe even a 2BR is within reach for less than $2000.

Midtown West and Murray Hill are WAY too expensive for that budget!

Definitely take the Bolt Bus: www.boltbus.com
Free WiFi, electrical plugs, much safer, owned by Greyhoud. Better than Chinatown.

By coincidence, the Times just published an article about a couple from Europe looking for a $2,000 one bedroom in NYC (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/16/re...ref=realestate). Spoiler alert: The ended up in Astoria.
