Hi, I'm a single woman looking at an apartment a block from the Grand St. L stop in what was described to me as Williamsburg. I think the apt itself is either on Bushwick or Graham Ave. I'd like to know first, is this Williamsburg, and more importantly, is it a safe neighborhood in general? I consider myself street smart and have never had any problems, but I don't want to feel freaked out coming home at night on the subway and don't want to be around crack, guns, etc. I had enough of that living in Oakland, CA. I'm a little confused as to what's East Williamsburg, Bushwick, and how things change around these areas. Thank you!

I only remember the area around the Graham stop[ (which is a few blocks off anyway), and I recall it being a nice area. There is some retail on Graham in the blocks near Grand St.
I dont know the exact boundaries but it should still be Williamsburg

Thanks for responding.

Anyone else know about Grand Street and Bushwick Ave specifically?

Thank you.

It's safe. There's a housing project a block south of Bushwick Av(starting on Maujer), but it's safe. The jail, I mean high school, known as the Eastern District is located right on that busy intersection. So when schools out, it can get hectic. You're literally on top of the L train to & fro Manhattan, a 10 or so minute ride. So yeah, it's not bad. Heading back home at night shouldn't be a problem.

I'd still consider that Williamsburg, a bit closer towards Bushwick, but it's a decent area. Living right by the subway stop, that area is usually pretty busy, which is a good thing. I lived in Bushwick around 2000 before it was really gentrified, and I never had any problems.

Are you a transplant coming from another area? If you're not used to city life, you might not feel as comfortable.

I know that area very well. That was the heart of my rental/sales area for Williamsburg, when working in real estate from 2003 until this year.
That area is considered "East Williamsburg" by the new generation and realtors, but by old-timers, it was the beginning of Bushwick. I consider that area to be the heart of East Williamsburg, with Bushwick beginning about 1/2 mile away--at Flushing Avenue. Anyway, it is an area that has some wonderful tree-lined streets to the north of Grand St, but to the south of Grand Street--things can get sketchy. That housing project complex is large, but relatively safer than others in NYC. When the school at the corner of Bushwick and Grand St releases its students, Grand Street becomes a total zoo filled with a lot of unruly (and some scary) kids.
Just stay to the north of Grand St, and it will be a much better experience.

Daytime is an OK! Nighttime is a KO! Coming from Manhattan, one stop before Graham is good! After that...Keep your fingers, toes and eyes crossed! I used to live there, so I know!
