I am looking for a good high school in the bronx, preferably one with science /math focus. According to sources, some of the schools have gangs ant things of that sort. Can anyone recommend a good public high school beside the specialized ones? thanks
I'd suggest that you start by taking a walk through Inside Schools for some more-or-less objective reviews of different schools. Lots of good information there!

I believe that would be one of the "specialized schools" that the OP is NOT looking for. Admission to the school is highly competitive, and applicants must achieve a high enough score on the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT).
I have heard good things about the Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy on W237th, though I am not sure if they have a particular science focus.
The only problem with Riverdale/Kingsbridge is that is a zoned middle/high school, meaning you must live in Riverdale and graduate one of the elementary schools (such as PS 24 or PS 81).
I truly believe, from personal experience, that there are ways and activities at any school that will keep you away from gang activity.
Having said that, if you can get into BX Science, do it! I would, however, investigate the rift there between faculty and principal (it's been in the news). Lehman is also a good school. I'm sure there are others, but those two stick out.
