Be aware of one thing: MTA gives you an employee pass allowing you to use the system primarily to cover itself. Nobody says you're not allowed to drive to work. BUT...if you're late on account of traffic, your time can still be cut. The official response to your lateness will be, "Don't you have an employee pass?" On the other hand, if you're on a train, something can happen and you could report to work an hour late, and you're completely covered.

By the way, your question sounds as though you expect to be reporting to the same work location five days a week. This will most definitely not be the case. When you first come out, you're "extra extra," meaning that you have no regular job assignment. You can--and you probably will--be given jobs at opposite ends of the city each day. One day, it's the J train out of Jamaica, the next day, the N train at Coney Island, etc. (Persevere! Things will get better fairly quickly!)
Thanks Fred. I'm fully aware that I will not be reporting to the same location everyday. That's part of the reason I'm thinking of driving sometimes (If I had to report in Jamaica, for example it would take me 1 hr 14 min in the car, but at least 2 hr 15 min on mass transit). As far as being late, if I'm less then a half hour early for work I feel late. When I worked in the city previously I would leave 3 hours before my shift for a 45 min car ride to allow time for traffic and finding parking. Meaning sometimes I'd be as much as 2 hours early.

Thanks again for the response.

Mid #3,000's? letter next year? are you kidding me? I don't think they will reach that far before the list expires in 4 years. Unless you meant to say mid #300's.

Why even bother starting the pre employment process if you aren't ready yet. Just don't show up
when the letter says you are supposed to, then when you are ready contact DCAS either by mail or
in person to have your name reinstated to the list. You are allowed up to 3 different times to postpone.

got the letter to report on monday. this is a godsend. i really want the job but i am very worried about my criminal history that has been sealed and/or expunged. i am not sure if i should disclose it on the application. stupid things i did in my early 20s. ive always gotten a conditional discharge meaning you plead guilty to a lesser crime and as long as u stay out of trouble for a year the record is sealed. i never been incarcirated. just the one nighters in central bookings and i never had to pay bail and always kept my court dates. i will be 30 in a few months and have my first child on the way. this would literally be a lifesaver for me. it would be devastating to lose out on this oppurtunity because of mistakes i made as a young adult. the view on life is much different when ur 21 22 as opposed to when you are 29 30. any thoughts or advice or if anyone has been in a similar situation and still got the job any info would be deeply appreciated. thank you

Quick question, will an extensive work history get me dq'd? For example earlier on in my 10 year history that the application is asking for I jumped from job to job a lot and had small periods of unemployment. The moving around became better overtime but the longest job I've held was for 2 years total along with my current job which is 1 1/2 years so far. Will that look bad and DQ me since that will be added on to a summons i will have to list for an open container from years ago? I have my pre interview/medical on Monday.

I took the test I think in 08!exam 8094 I received an 97. Lowish score and still took 4 years. I have a contract with my current job until January. Will I have to break my contract? I was told by a friend I might be able to put it off till then and start then but they could also tell me the same day that I will start in 2 weeks. Can I still complete my obligations with my current job but not loose this current opportunity?
Congrats! What is your list # with a score of 97? thanks

It doesn't hurt to get that step out of the way.

Do you think not telling them is a good idea?

As far as I know, no. As long as you meet the employment requirements and disclose the multiple jobs you've had on the employment package that you'll get, you're good to go.

My score was actually 97.333 and my list number still was 782... I guess its because a lot of people took the test with veterans preference. I'm going to go tomorrow do what I have to do and find out what I can do to postpone. I want to graduate college!!!!!

Would anybody that's been through the process be able to tell me if they will let us know if we're gonna be hired the day of the pre-interview/medical or will they tell us to come back at a later date? Also will they give us that date to come back when were done with the medical or will they tell us to wait on another letter in the mail?
