I know it's risky & not advised but does anyone have any personal experiences w/ living & working in nyc illegally here from ireland?
I know a few people from there who have been able to live & work here for months & even as long as 9yrs, illegally. (& the reason they are illegal is because its so complicated and almost impossible to get a visa! so i dont blame them!)
any irish folks out there who know what its like trying to find jobs here once u move here? how long did it take you, & did most places care that you didn't have a greencard? a good friend of mine just lost her job in ireland & has been wanting to move here for ages, she'll likely do bartending once she gets over.. .& what about "getting caught"? how often does that happen?
This is frowned upon pretty much unanimously by all Americans. The reason being people pay taxes to support our country and many people have made sacrifices over generations to come here legally or protect this country and it'd be unfair to all American citizens to circumvent that. It's fine if you want to come to America, there's nothing wrong with that, but you have to do it by the books. If you get caught you will be permanently barred from ever entering the country again. Personally, if I was from abroad, I wouldn't risk that. I couldn't imagine never being able to even visit New York, that would really be terrible. If I couldn't live here, I'd at least want to visit once a year for a week!
It doesn't matter if your Irish or from another country, America is open to almost everyone, but not if it's illegally. Sure, it might be difficult to get a visa if your from a certain coutry, but coming here to visit and then staying is not fair to everyone who is here legally and do what we need to do to keep the country running.
I wouldn't characterize it as "risky". Hardly anyone gets caught and generally the stories I've heard involve raids at chicken processing plants involving dozens of workers. I don't think I've ever read of a bar getting raided by the INS. I have to imagine, though, that getting a bartending gig is difficult these days with the economy the way it is and the premium people have for cash jobs, while they are collecting unemployment.
I'm not trying to encourage anyone to subvert the immigration process, but the reality is our borders are porous and our government is not doing much about those who are here undocumented.
There was actually an article about this subject in The New York Times a month ago. Its facinating to me that there's all this worry about South Americans and Mexicans hopping the boarder when there's probably tons more illegal immigrants from Europe and Asia.
Anyway, according to the article the Irish illegals get their jobs the old fashion way, word of mouth and networking. There are also organizations that will help. They're for legal immigrants but they probably do some connections behind closed doors.
That being said, this city, let alone this country isn't exactly the place to go when your strapped for cash, not only is it expensive, but the jobs just aren't there, and if you show up now, you'd probably just be exploited like every other illegal immigrant getting paid 3 bucks an hour, if they get paid at all. Hell, a lot of our college graduates are becoming expats and heading out to Europe, Japan, China and India for opportunities.

I know people who did, i havent heard of them getting caught yet!
Queens seems to be the hub for most of them, with the local irish centres helping you get accommodation/jobs.

Probably? According to what? Most relied statistics imply that over half of illegals are from Mexico alone, plus plenty more from other Latin American countries.

I will say that in NY, we do get a very mixed group of people who work illegally, but nationally its heavily mexican and latin american waves. The numbers on wikipedia indicate 6.5-7 millin mexicans and about a million from El Salvador and Guatamala combined are undocumented immigrants in the US. So, every other country in the world has sent us about 4-5 million folks total. Everything I've ever seen published on this topic has been in line with these numbers.
I dont understand how you can be issued a pay check without a SS number...
