For a city that is so international and so diverse, I'm just in total shock that even the Greeks here seem to pronounce it "JI-ro."
I wouldn't have thought it a big deal, but I've just been incorrectly "corrected" for the third time.
We're not talking about a bizarre or unpopular dish that just made it to America here people.

I thought it was just me because when I pronounced it properly people still don't know what I am talking about. I have a very close Greek friend from abroad and they laughed how some people pronounced it here. In Greek it's pronounce as "yee-raw". In the states I hear people pronounced it yeah-oh or ji-oh when for English it should be jeer-oh. Again, in Britain, they called it mostly Doner Kebab which I so much preferred because the lamb (or chicken) is not bulky but sliced thin and lots of salads on it along with some very delicious sauces from garlic yogurt to hot chilli.
