Sorry that you didn't say a word about your budget or preferred cuisine. There are tons of terrific restaurants a bit further west, around Ninth Avenue. If you come into NYC rarely, I hope you don't waste a meal possibility on something like a diner of coffeeshop.
Becco, as was suggested, is a good place on 46th, but that whole block is known as Restaurant Row and is practically wall-to-wall with interesting places. In terms of easy geography, The Modern is one block north on 53rd. For something more exotic, Firebird for Russian food, or Molyvos or Estiatorio Milos for Greek. Or try doing a search on Chowhound for dozens more.
