Okay, just a couple of weeks ago I posted a question about the Pros & Cons of having a car in NYC. Now I want to find a neighborhood to hopefully reside in...

I will be attending Colombia University which is in Morningside Heights, Manhattan. The only thing about it is that I don't see myself living in Manhattan, so I was thinking about the boroughs of Brooklyn (preferably), Queens & the Bronx. I have enough for a $3,000 apartment or to save money I can find a roommate, I want the area to be diverse, and relatively close to my college. Also, I need a garage for my car I will bring with me don't know if I'm going to be driving it a lot, because of how tough it is to find a parking spot in Manhattan. So could you guys also give me the best route to catch a train or a taxi to Morningside.

thanks!!

Don't do Brooklyn or Queens. You can get a studio in Morningside Heights within walking distance from the college for less than $1800 in a good neighborhood. Parking will be steep, but if I remember correctly, your parents are paying for that, so that isn't a concern (although they may change their minds after getting the first parking and insurance bills). If you don't want to live in Manhattan, live in North Jersey or the Bronx (Riverdale maybe), but definitely not Brooklyn. I work near there and at one point, my boyfriend and I were looking at Brooklyn. After a few days heading straight from work to view apartments, I vetoed the idea because the commute was insane. It can easily take an hour to get there, and more if you are looking to pay less than you would in Manhattan. I have a friend who lives in Park Slope and is finishing her credential at Teacher's College and she says she easily spends over an hour in jam packed rush hour trains getting to class. If you have a car, Jersey might be worth it because you can go across the GWB and drive down. Jersey is much more car friendly and the rent is much better.

PS, It's Columbia. Colombia is a country.

A TAXI to Morningside Heights? YIKES! I do think you'd be better off ditching the car and getting a roommate in the area of the University. It's actually quite nice there.

Maybe Harlem between 110th & 125th; 7th - Madison. You could probably find parking there and the area is diverse from what I see. Check it out and see what you think!

A lot can be said for re-visiting the location.

There is no easy parking around Columbia U. I agree with others: driving in Manhattan is a bad idea.

You should also try to take the train from various routes to Columbia. From Queens, it will probably take you WELL over an hour (I've tried it). Same from Brooklyn.

$3K is a whole lot to pay for an apartment during college.

Why can't you see yourself living in Manhattan, yet you have decided to attend Columbia?

I'm really confused. Your location says, 'After College Brooklyn/Bronx/Queens NYC.' Have you been accepted at Columbia? You're obviously aware that Columbia is in Manhattan, but are you just trying to say that you'd LIKE to attend Columbia and then just stay in NYC? It's really confusing.

Not yet! Right now I'm knocking off my last semester at Western Michigan University, and I already checked if my credits would transfer and they will. So I'm basically guessing that they'll accept me, I have a 3.7 gpa so I'm also riding on that!

I know there are hundreds of colleges in the NYC area and I'm going to apply for more than one.
