Definitely explains the attitudes. Still reminds me of my university theatre days. It might be a generalization, but for the most part the least talented or the least secure formed the "hipper than thou" cliques, bullied each other into conforming in terms of style and tastes in music and theatre, and had the worst attitudes.
The emergence of hipsters has more to do with technology especially in relation to music, and urbanization, than money. There's also been "cool" affluent young styles, be it the preppies in the 80's or the trustafarians of the 90's - because of the internet there is more creativity and choice- this doesn't mean better or worse, so don't even go there.
