I'm doing some work in NJ the next few days and hope to be able to catch the Devils and Rangers at the Garden on Saturday. I figure I can take the train in from Linden. So any bars or taverns nearby you can recommend for a sandwich, some beer and a shot or two for good luck. Me:Anglo, 40 yrs old, hockey fan...so Im not interested in some clubby 21 yr old D-bag place.

There's an Irish bar called Stout on 33rd between 6th and 7th. It has decent pub grub (burgers, onion rings, etc.) and a big selection of beers. It is also a huge place so there is usually room for a few more people. Before the hockey games, the place is full of Ranger fans, so you might want to try to arrive early to make sure you get a table.

PS: See you in the Houston forum -- We're moving to Houston this weekend!

You can try Tir Na Nog. This is on 8th btwn 33rd and 34th. Might be less of a Mod cut crowd. Little more of an Irish pub/ restaurant. Pretty good Irish pub fare. Overall, every place around the Garden tends to get crowded before events ESPECIALLY Stout.

You can also go South on 7th Ave a few blocks to either for Mustang Harry's and Mustang Sally's. Decent food at both.

more than just a couple blocks away ... (don't get me wrong... i love the GM)

tir na nog is nice, but stick with stout... stout is my go to bar when in the penn station area

you could also go to 'tracks' on the lirr level in penn station... that place is great too

stay away from mustang harry/sally on 7th... their service sucked everytime i went in there, especially when it's busy before a game or concert

Thanks all, went to Stout and had a nice time. Staff even comped me a drink. Game was good too bad the blueshirts lost though but some decent puck.

Need to upgrade garden so that guys 6'1" and 250 can sit it seats w/o busting knees.
