Cattaraugus, Chautauqua. or Erie? (Buffalo, Lewiston: ski resorts, school districts, restaurant)

I want to relocate to a city/town near or on Lake Erie and I would like some opinions from the locals. The only place in WNY that I have visited is Chautauqua Lake on vacation. I am also considering the Erie and Cleveland areas but would appreciate an info on WNY.
I have recently become single in a extremely family oriented region so I want to get the heck out of here. I am looking for an town/city that is close to outdoor activities, yet not far from civilization. I love towns with history, character, and great architecture. School districts aren't a concern because I don't have kids. The proximity to lakes, rivers and parks is a must. I am too old for clubs, I prefer the pub/tavern/restaurant establishments. I love art towns so quirky is good.
Ellicottville in Catt county fits. Very festive town with lots of pubs and eats, it's become a destination in itself started by the draw of the ski resorts there. Great outdoor stuff all around... Allegany state park, lots of state forests, mountain biking trails, of course the skiing, Letchworth state park, Zoar valley, Chaut. lake, Kinzua, Rushford lake, Cuba lake, Lime lake). And it's a very easy drive up to Buffalo.
If you want more urban, check out the Elmwood area of Buffalo, very artsy area that is loaded with amazing architecture, very impressive. Buffalo actually has some pretty good parks too outside of the Niagara gorge and falls, and it's an easy drive up to the wilderness of Ontario or down into the southern tier.
Ellicottville is fairly good. If you go there, you will definitely get quirky.
You might look at Lewiston in Niagara County -very old town, has Old Fort Niagara, definitely nice, has Artpark, near the Niagara Wine Trail, near civilization....
Ellicottville sounds like a great fit based on your criteria. I agree 100% with Krisps breakdown of that area.
Now the issue could be a job. Unless you're independently wealthy, you're going to need a job and you would not like commuting to Buffalo from there. That said, there will be limited opportunities in the Southern Tier simply based on the numbers (it's pretty rural once outside of town)
Depending on your job situation, you'd probably love Ellicottville if you have the means.
