So they're all shrinking outside the Capital District.

Actually, except for maybe Erie county, the numbers are small. Monroe country for example, only lost 0.35%. That could go up or down year over year.

Onondaga county= -1.24%

yeah...these are also estimates; which tend to really underestimate population figures. I remember reading that before the 2000 census the population of Monroe County was estimated to have dropped from 713,000 in 1990 to 712,000 in 2000; instead it went up to 735,000. A population gain of 23,000 and a difference from estimation of 24,000.

Interesting....Also, form reading this, if we can get some change in terms of government in the state, maybe these counties could see population increases considering that the population doesn't really change that much. It does seem like the Capital district on down to Downstate area pretty much fine. I know Jefferson County(Watertown) is also one of the fastest growing counties in the sate due to the expansion of Fort Drum. I belieeve that Orange County is the fastest growing county in NY State.

Yes, also just off of that list (with a population a little over 100k) would be Ontario County; which is essentially turning more and more into Rochester suburbia; it's probably the fastest growing county Upstate.

And if trends stay the same it would still take until around 2050 for Monroe to have more people than Erie.

I bet the decrease is slowing, and for Erie country that is still *much* better than the decreases over the past 50 years. I bet we will see the number break even in the near future.

How could we forget Tompkins County with Ithaca growing as well.

Those are the top 10 by population, if you click the link you can view any of them. I was looking through them, I was surprised to see Niagara county had a gain in 2008.

I'm shocked that Schenectady County is growing. The rest were all pretty much as I thought they'd be.
