Minus the rope, my son would love that gift. Throwing rocks and hitting things with sticks are his two favorite hobbies.

To the OP, I say no smartwatch toy. My 6 year old has an iphone, so anything that is a toy is going to seem a bit silly to a kid who has probably already played with real smart devices.

Legos are the answer. You just can't go wrong with them, and they come in every price range, from 10 dollars to over 100. If you don't know exactly what he's into right now (most 6 year olds are into Minecraft, Star Wars, and Jurassic World, and sometimes still some superheroes), then Lego City is a good bet. The rocket ($100) and the space shuttle ($35) kits are so popular they are selling out of my local stores.

One other great toy is the Zoomer Dino. It comes in several shapes and sizes and it's so much fun even I can't stop playing with it. It's an interactive robot that has its own mind - not just remote control.

and wondering if there is something else a typical 6 year old boy would like.
Those are good choices. My son love Legos at that age. Just another thought. He is 21 now. It's an ever popular toy.

If you are not sure then give their parents a gift card (walmart, target, toys r us or amazon) before Christmas. That way they can buy whatever their kid has on his wish list & give it to him on your behalf on Christmas day. I know its not ideal but the purpose should be to give something the kid wants & will like for sure. I am not a big fan of surprises.

We got those for our kids last year. They like them a lot. They have built in rechargeable batteries.

I always like to give Highlights Magazine to children. They love the magazine and really enjoy getting their own mail every month.
