My younger sibling is engaged and supposed to be getting married this summer. He mentioned this to a family friend , I heard with my own ears them say “well better late than never...”
Uh excuse me?
Is that pretty rude and out of place to say in response to an announcement like that? Kind of the same as if you announce your pregnancy and someone says “well I guess better late than never...”
I wanted to say “ and maybe one day you’ll recover from being an idiot- better late than never”

Am I making this a bigger deal than it is or is that as rude as it sounds to me?

Yes, it's rude. Or possibly misplaced "humor."

Edited to say, depending on the relationship, it's hard to say for sure.

As it wasn't said to you, you are making a bigger deal of it than it is.

It was probably said tongue in cheek or jokingly.

My husband and I were together for 8 years before getting married. I can assure you our relatives were thinking and saying the same thing! We just laughed along with them "Yep!".

Before this decade is over, people will declare all humor and playful teasing off limits if we let them.

Should we just ban communicating in any way with anyone else to be on the safe side?

I don't see how that's joking or teasing. It's not humorous. It's rude<snip> .

Yea and the tone he said it was like sigh, “geez” isn’t it about time anyways? Not a playful “oh so happy for you better late than never, and so happy for you” it was to me kind of similar as I said if I were or someone were to announce a second pregnancy for example and instead of a cordial appropriate response to communicate being happy for the person, if instead it was a deflated tone of “oh okay, well I guess better late than never..” type of thing

Was your sibling offended by the remark?

Being triggered by something said about somebody else to somebody else.

OK.

Do I think it is rude? No, I don't. But I don't do trigger-by-proxy, either.

So people are only allowed to react now in certain forms? Doesn't anyone let anything go any more?
