Can you make a "sub-club" with a smaller group derived from the established bookclub? Not to be disruptive, but to be intensifying the social time the ladies gather. You could float the idea with 3 book choices to see if anyone else is of like mind on the kinds of books you prefer.
One book a month is a short order for me. Maybe others would agree.

If you can't actually read and try to discuss the material... I would NOT recommend faking it if you want them to actually respect you and think you bring something to the group. They'll just think you're a lightweight and not very bright.

"That Scooby... bless her heart I am not sure she even knows how to read..."

You don't want that. You want to be someone they think has something to say.

OP - Our book club has the hostess select the monthly book. At first one person was making all the selections and all the books were of the same genre. Now we read a wide variety and I like our method since I’ve read books I wouldn’t have otherwise.

Just an idea and keep on reading!

Try on line book stores like abebooks.com. You sometimes have to pay $1 for the book and $4 for the postage but it’s cheaper than buying new. Also used books on Amazon and eBay.

But the books are chosen a year in advance, and most of them are these boring feel good fiction novels I would never choose for myself. I'm a noob, so I won't have any input on choices for a long time. I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to drop out because I enjoy the women's company and don't socialize much as it is, but I don't like paying for and reading books I don't like either. I was thinking about faking it, reading the reviews for them on Amazon, and pretending I read them, but of course that's cheating. Thoughts?
...probably need to switch if you can’t get them to vary the menu. My wife is in one and she’s been getting fed up with the menu consisting almost entirely of books about dysfunctional families. It seems odd to me that a book club would focus in on just one flavor.

Why would it be odd if everyone in the group enjoys a particular genre?

IME, genre-specific book clubs are pretty common.

If you enjoy the group, continue reading the books, but get them from the library. So that you are not out of pocket. I was in a book club I really enjoyed it, & we read a wide variety of books, we were limited to 12 in number, which meant that we each got to pick a book for our month & also host. will admit I read some books that were a struggle to finish but I am glad I did. I also read books I would never have picked out by myself.

Oh my gosh, I can empathize - I HATE "having" to read a book I am not interested in. That's the main reason I dropped out of our local book club - I just thought "I can't stand month after month of reading this tripe." Ain't nobody got time fo dat.

But you have gotten some good advice if you want to stay for the socializing. I'd totally cheat though and read the excerpts or reviews or whatever.

I'm interested in the titles of the books you're reading, OP.

I really need a light "feel good" book occasionally - as long as they're well-written.

I'm also interested in what genre you would prefer?

A poster earlier mentioned in her book club the hostess picks the books - which is what my book club does also. Makes for a good variety of books.

Also, I almost never pay for books. Our library has most of them.

We did get stuck in WWII a couple years ago.

Why do you do library sales, and not just check a book out from the library?
