Someone asked if my mom and I were sisters. My mom is 77 and I’m 48. Does that mean I look older than 48? My mom maybe looks 65 but not any younger. It really gets to me. I don’t feel like I look that old but nobody ever says I look young when I tell them I’m 48.
It was a ("fake") compliment for your mom.
Your mom must look very good for her age and there must be many similarities you both share.
Don't dwell on it.
Maybe you look older than you are.
Maybe your mother looks a lot younger than she is.
Maybe the lady didn't look at either of you that closely.
Maybe it was the lighting.
Maybe you hadn't enough rest the night before.
Maybe you were wearing an unflattering color.
Perhaps it's your hairstyle or your clothing.
Or maybe the two of you share facial features and other physical mannerisms quite closely, reminding her of sisters. Yes, a 29 year age difference isn't trivial, but older and younger sisters can still appear a lot alike regardless of age.
IME, being offended is a choice YOU make. It isn't imposed on you by the other person. Personally, I'd probably laugh this off as someone being rather unobservant and forget about it. But then I'm not touchy about aging. I don't really care how old or young someone else thinks I am.

Most likely, they are complimenting your mom, not insulting you. Try to visualize the experience from your mom's perspective, rather than your own, and be happy that you were part of making her feel good about herself. In most cases in life, it is never about us.
Welcome to my life. My father was 20 and mom was 19 when they had me. My father had kids with a second wife, finishing at 43. When I first got out of the Army, we were in the mall with the 3 youngest. A lady approached to compliment ME on my children and my father on his grandchildren.
well, please give us "age recognition challenged" a break.
i cannot tell if a woman is 23 or 43.
botox, makeup, and surgery make
it even more difficult.
however, i can guess the weight
within 2 pounds. my superpower.
