Then why not just say you are looking for a "quaint and charming Southern town with charecter"?

We have plenty...none of them are 'New England type' though and for daylight's sake.....quaint and charming is not a New England export.

Sorry Desdemona! Olmstead designed Pinehurst to be a replica of a New England village back in 1902. He wanted to replicate New England in the South. I feel he accomplished what he set out to do. The little village of Pinehurst is exactly like small towns in Vermont, New Hampshire, etc. It reminds me of a smaller scale Greenwich, Conn. Upscale shops, cozy restaurants, and even an ice cream/soda shop complete with stools at a serving counter. Red brick sidewalks instead of cobblestones.

Thank you to all who have been helpful with pictures and information about towns. It is a great starting point for my search. And... pardon me to all who have taken offense to my asking for a "New England" style town. I am looking for something that reminds one of a Norman Rockwell painting and when I think of Norman Rockwell I think of New England.

New Bern seemed awfully dumpy when I went. There is a small section that you might call quaint. Overall though, it wasn't appealing. Wilmington has more historic areas than New Bern, but it's also larger, more a "city" than a "town".

Calm down!

She's just looking for a quaint little town in which to perhaps move.

Geez... people have to be so "politically correct" these day!

It has nothing to do with being "politically correct". North Carolina is not New England.....if you want a New England style town...go there.

Don't come down here expecting NC to be just like where you left or anything other then NC. There is a wonderful and unique heritage to this state....and I personally think it's rude to want to turn it into anything else.

WOW !!!!!!!!! NO ......... you didn't HAVE to say it. The lady from New England was ONLY asking about various towns. WHAT HAPPENED to Southern hospitality ????? I'm from New York, and also looking for the same type of town. IF anyone from NC was asking for help in NY, we would gladly respond, WITH kindness and RESPECT !!!!!!!!!!!

I can hear the shouting all the way here from your post!

The op broke a cardinal Southern rule by saying, "thats not how we do things up north" .
