Smithfield and Selma have many hotels designed for the interstate traveler. We found a couple places from a web site called
Pet Friendly Hotels - Pet Vacations . We haven't used the places yet, but a couple examples are the Baymont and Super 8 in Smithfield, and the Quality Inn in Selma. You can look up the prices for when you travel, but my listings from last year show them under $70/night, except for the Baymont which was $79.
There will be lots of outlet mall shopping and restaurants if you have time to stop. Smithfield is a small town surrounded by farm country. I'd suggest not leaving anything valuable in the car, but the area is fairly safe.
