My husband and I are retiring and are looking to relocate to NC. I am looking in the Whiteville area but the crime statistics are high for thefts and buglars. Can anyone tell me more about this area?

If you are looking at the White Lake area, the thefts can be explained by a lot of vacant vacation homes. If you are looking at the town limits of Whiteville, there are a lot of thefts. There are also many low-income people, and not a lot of good jobs.
What attracts you to Whiteville?
White Lake is a quiet area, and my husband and I looked at it briefly for retirement. White Lake is spring-fed, and still very clean, i believe.

There's a cluster of high poverty rates in that area of the state.
Robeson County - 31%
Columbus County 23%
Bladen County - 24%
The statewide poverty rate is 16%.
Also check the statistics on counties which have lost population since the last census. I believe that includes Columbus and Bladen Counties. Losing population makes for cheap real estate, but also other unhealthy trends.

What makes you interested in Whiteville? It's not a place that would pop up on my list of potential retirement locations. Probably cheap real estate. A lot of thru traffic on the weekends with people from all over the state going to the beach.
Whiteville is a nice community in itself...it is just located in a poor rural county. Has a little over 5K residents and some nice neighborhoods. Whiteville also offers a bit of Americana...it's courthouse is a drive around, just like Pittsboro...it is the county seat and is where the Medical Center is located. The community college is right outside of town. It was formerly the headquarters for United Carolina Bank (UCB) which was bought out by BB&T in '97.
Ward's Grill and Sophie's in Whiteville are some of the better old time establishments in the State. Whiteville has its own city schools still and they are very community oriented....High School sports are big in Whiteville. Its a close knit community and is actually not a bad place to retire, especially if you are familiar with the community or have relatives there. Its less than an hour to both Wilmington and N Myrtle.
In terms of crime, Whiteville's neighbor Chadbourn is notorious for its crime issues, which can sometimes spill into Whiteville since Chadbourn doesn't have many businesses. Chadbourn's original history is quite a story in itself (which I won't go into because it may be sensitive in nature), which may explain some of its long standing problems.
I think Whiteville is significantly undervalued (maybe because of the county its in). The community is closeknit, its schools are pretty good and it strives to be the best community in its region.
As an aside, I wish more folks wouldn't comment about a community unless they actually know something about it...there is way too much statistics pushing, which don't always explain the reasons behind the statistics.
