FWIW...the Hyde County per pupil spending is a bit high since they have Ocracoke Island to contend with.

Geography and Demographics play big roles on this list.

Why do you need two administrations overlapping like that? Wouldn't one cost less and give the same results? Unless one of the city/county is a lot further back compared to the other.

Same thing for those eastern counties. Hyde County has an average daily membership of 574; Tyrrell 570. Could those students receive a better education if they would combine with Dare County, a relatively rich county with 4,917? I am NOT talking about busing kids from Hyde/Tyrrell to Dare. Just a merger of administrations.

They don't overlap. They're separate.

I'm not sure if there would be significant cost savings to merge the systems, but merging is something that is talked about every so often. Both Orange County Schools and Chapel Hill Carrboro Schools are well funded locally now and perform better than most other school systems in the state. They may merge at some point, but I don't know why you would want to fix something that ain't broke. As school systems they're not underfunded or underperforming.

School districts discuss possibility of mergers

State Senator Harry Brown says the 25 smallest counties in our state could end up combining their education systems with neighboring counties.

But the issue is in the stages and that has barely even been discussed yet as the state commission works to research the matter.
