I moved from CT to NC last year and would move back in a heartbeat. All the reasons you mentioned and the overcrowding, the tiny sized building lots, the traffic and the fact that they just want to keep building more and more. There is no charm, just a hectic feel (we are right outside Raleigh) and my stress levels have risen dramatically.
Geez, uhh....I wonder what would be causing this? At any rate maybe a trip well outside the Capital City might be in order?
North Carolina was a wonderful place until we got so many people moving into the areas and crowding things. I often wonder why so many NY'ers move here and then constantly complain about everything. The problems you described are caused by so many people moving here.

You won't hear me complaining! Yes, I am from NY, grew up in the Bronx & lived for 14 years in the country before moving south. We LOVE it here..are quite content & very happy with our lives here. We have a lovely home & very nice neighbors from all over the country. This is just another chapter in our lives...we adapt...we learn to live in our surroundings. So what if I can't get "Italian Sausage"...I'm Italian & I think I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've had Italian Sausage this past year. I don't need to have it in order to live a full & happy life, it's not that important. What's important is that my family is happy & we know we've made the right choice to live here.
IMHO, the people that move here & complain, will complain & whine about everything & anything no matter where they live. You can't make all of the people happy all of the time.
Hey NC_Bound, I am a native NY'er and moved to MD 3½yrs ago. Taxes are a lot lower here as they are in other states such as NC. Their taxes are different then NY's and you will probably find that NC taxes are actually less expensive then in NY even though you have to pay some different taxes every yr. The cost of living can be less also, such as food, gas, housing, etc. Don't get discouraged and keep asking questions and checking out other websites for more info. There is a ton of info out there. I love MD however the houses are priced out of sight even though the property taxes are less then in NY. I am looking to move to Georgia near the East Coast. My sister has lived in the Raleigh, NC area for many yrs and likes it there as far as I know. She has never told me different at least.
Good Luck
John

what about the rising cost of living in the area? Do you find that it's increasing?
I am sorry to hear that. That is so sad to me. Because as I am sure we all know, moving back to the NE isn't so easy.
I thank you for your honesty and wish you luck.
Yes, not easy at all. My second son will be born (via scheduled c-section) 3 weeks from today and I have an almost 2 year old. Just waiting for the housing market up there to come down like it has been over the past few months. So things need to run their course a bit.

BTW, wanting Brooklyn sausage or California Trader Joes or Wawa's from... (is it New England?) is not the same as whining & complaining & disparaging lving here. It is just a statement that we are glad we will be getting those things. I hear more natives slamming the state on this board than transplants.
NY is the original home of "Mom & Pop" shopping & restaurants. When a chain comes in, (even Trader Joe's) locals complain a lot, just like here. Then over time they start going to them.
This is happening all over the country. The N & O had a big article about it this weekend. Do you really think New Yorkers are causing national chains to spring up all over the country? Or just here. Really.
NY is not known for its chains, it is known for all the original stores & eateries.
And, BTW, NY has been getting lots of BBQ places lately, and we welcomed them, we were glad to add to the lineup.
