Democrat Dan McCready said Tuesday he's raised over $1.6 million for his 9th Congressional District campaign. McCready is the only Democratic candidate running in the special election for the seat in a district that spans from south Charlotte to Lumberton.

A new election was forced after a state investigation found evidence of fraud and mishandling of absentee ballots in the November general election.

McCready said he ended the first quarter of 2019 with $1.46 million cash on hand — garnering donations that average around $41. He called the campaign an unmatched grassroots effort.

"This is just one more sign of the incredible energy and momentum we're seeing on the ground as we head into the special election," he said. "Let this be a warning to every politician who turned a blind eye to election fraud and corruption. We aren't just talking about taking our state back. We're doing it. This is just the beginning."

McCready runs unopposed in the May Democratic primary. Ten Republicans are running in the primary to replace Harris, who opted not to run in the special election after the state investigation found evidence that a political operative working for him illegally collected absentee-by-mail ballots.

Primaries will be held May 14. If a second primary is not needed, the 9th District general election will be held Sept. 10. Should a second primary be called, the general election will be pushed to Nov. 5.

This should be interesting. The people on NC Spin have been indicating a real interest in the commercial that Mr Bishop has been running. I don't think that any of them think that that commercial is going to work well for Mr Bishop in the long run.

"Charges against multiple individuals, including Mr. McCrae Dowless, who was hired by the Harris campaign, remain pending, and investigators continue probing other areas of evidence." Dowless oversaw an absentee ballot harvesting scheme that sent people door to door in Bladen and Robeson counties to get voters to request absentee ballots, which is legal. Then operatives went back to collect the actual ballots, which is illegal under North Carolina law due to tampering concerns.
Dowless has apparently run this sort of operation for years in Bladen County for politicians on both sides of the aisle. His participation in Harris' 9th District campaign two years ago became national news and led to changes in state absentee ballot laws, as well as the do-over election.
Harris, a Charlotte minister, initially fought calls for a new election, but he reversed course after his son testified against him during State Board of Elections hearings last year.
"I am personally grateful for the detailed investigation by the Wake County District Attorney and the cooperating federal and state agencies to finally restore my reputation," Harris said in a statement. "I trust the investigators will continue their work so North Carolina voters can be assured that their vote counts in a system that follows the rule of law."
A special election was held in September, and Congressman
Dan Bishop
, a former state lawmaker from Mecklenburg County, now represents the district. Dowless faces a number of criminal charges. He's running for re-election this year to the local soil and water conservation board.
