From what I understand the NC House will will voting tomorrow(or very soon)on a smoking ban that would include restuarants. It passed the House committee today. Please call your representative if you support this.

Call your representative if you think people who risk tens of thousands of dollars of their own money to start a restaurant should have the right to let people smoke in it if they want to.

North Carolina legislators voted Wednesday evening (4-1-09) to amend a proposed ban smoking at restaurants and bars. The bill itself is still under discussion and votes are being taken on various amendments. Four amendments to the original bill have passed so far tonight. A final House vote is scheduled on Thursday, when it can be changed again. If approved, the bill would move to the Senate.

Also call if you think pregnant women trying to put themselves through school should be able to work without poisoning their baby before it is born.

We are trying to go smoke free in Mecklenburg County (Charlotte). Hopefully will be the 1st in the state. We have a website to visit if you live in Mecklenburg.

Not going to happen. It will be a statewide ban or nothing. The state legislature will not allow local governments to act on their own.

I'll be very surprised if the 2009 bill does not become law. The last time, it lost by just a few votes and the state's demographics has changed significantly since then with the influx of newcomers from more restrictive states of the northeast.

Update - A tentative House vote was held tonight. Lawmakers voted 75-42 after the adoption of an amendment that bars smoking in businesses that employ or serve anyone under age 18, but not other businesses. Smoking-friendly bars and restaurants would have to post that fact at every entrance. A final House vote is scheduled on Thursday, when it can be amended again. If approved, the bill would move to the state Senate. Proposed effective date - January 2, 2010.

Call if you believe you should be able to go into a restaurant, or any other business that caters to the public, and not smell some fools stinking cigarette. Or if you believe your daughter can get a summer job waiting tables for college money without coming home stinking like cigarette smoke and suffering the health risks of second hand smoke!

I worry that the loophole being created is just going to result in businesses stopping serving children or employing high school students. Just watch as resistant restaurant owners turn their establishments into adult only establishments instead of going smoke free. I am SOOOO disappointed in the watered down version. And, while the votes are not completely along party lines, it's the Republicans (who constantly tout their family values and "sanctity of life" positions) that are mostly responsible for fighting this ban that will make everybody healthier.
