Makes sense, but it's weird seeing that NW portion of ND in central time. I thought maybe Saskatchewan and Manitoba being in central time had something to do with it.
The western half of ND was at one time on Mountain time. Mandan was on Mountain Time when I first traveled to ND in the 80's but now the line is Stark and Billings counties, about 80 miles west. It certainly makes life easier if the whole state were in Central time but some people don't see it that way.
I find it a real pain to always be aware of what time zone you're in. I wish the whole state was central time. I have my cell phone set to ignore time zones from cell tower and just stay locked to central time. It's a pain to have to talk to someone in Dickinson when you're in Williston and trying to setup something that is time dependent.
Southwest North Dakota communities have voted on this several times and keep voting to retain Mountain Time. They can change if they want to, but for some reason, want to hang on to the past. They'd rather be a part of Montana and western South Dakota I guess???? Even though communities like Dickinson deal with towns like Williston, Bismarck, Minot, more than they do Rapid City or Billings. Central Time used to switch to Mountain time when you crossed the bridge south of Williston many years ago, but thank goodness McKenzie county for the most part is now central time as well. I think you have to drive south of Watford to the Long X bridge before it turns from central to mountain time zone now? Beulah and Hazen (with the power plants) are officially mountain time, but I've heard from workers there, that everyone sets their time to central time along with the power plants. Not sure if this is completely true or not though.

Yes, there is a sign around the Long X bridge welcoming you to mountain time as you go south.
