They have so much to offer the kids academically and athletically. I was amazed at all of the extra-curricular activities they have for the kids when I went to orientation for my daughter. We don't have any gated communities in our town but our crime rate is very low. We also only have about 2500 full time residents. BTW, I am not IN Milford but just outside. Still I don't think Milford is a bad area either. I would live there if I had to with no questions.
I second this. My husband and son and I live in Milford and we love it here and feel very safe. Our son goes to DDPS (he has an IEP/is special needs). It's been an incredibly positive experience and the teachers are very good, plus they offer many specials which makes for a nicely rounded education. We also are not in a gated community. This is the first I am hearing about our area being a place to avoid.

I grew up in Northern Wayne county, so I'm going to chime in and say that there are some wonderfully beautiful areas you may want to consider to the north of Honesdale, as well as some areas in a band northwest of Scranton. I've highlighted the ones that I think you may like the best on this map.

Equinunk and Damascus are very small communities near the Delaware River border with Sullivan County, NY (home to Bethel, site of the original Woodstock festival). Both places are very small but incredibly laid back, and there is a high number of artists per capita in those parts.

The band of places between the Abingtons and the area I call "Elkdale" are all very nice, generally speaking, and you can't really go wrong in any of them. The parts further south tend to cost more and be more upscale, while the parts to the north are more affordable and rural. The Abingtons is one of the most affluent suburbs of Scranton, and is roughly comprised of Clarks Summit, Newton Ransom, Lake Winola, Dalton, and Waverly. Moving north, you enter Justus, Montdale, and Scott Township, an area that includes several nice communities around lakes like Chapman, Heart, Newton, and Crystal Lakes. Continuing further north you reach the areas around the Elk Mountain ski resort, which are even smaller communities but no less lovely.

I hope you find this useful! These areas are all beautiful and somewhat of hidden gems in that they haven't been overrun with tourism and folks from the cities. While I sincerely hope they remain that way, they're great places for all down-to-earth folk to hang their hat.
