I'm driving from Baltimore to Syracuse tomorrow (and returning Saturday), and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations in terms of weird/quirky/unique restaurants to checkout along the way?

There are two routes to Syracuse, both are roughly the same distance. I could take 83 to Harrisburg, and then 81 up to Syracuse through Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, and Binghamton. The other option is taking 95 to 476 to 81. That would take me through Wilmington, the Philly suburbs, Allentown, Scranton, and Binghamton.

Also, are there any Pennsylvania-specific specialties that I should be sure to try?

Thanks so much for your help.

The only one that I can think of is Shopsin's in New York City, but that's way out of your way unless you go by train.

I don't know if it fits the bill but Victory Pig pizza has been around forever, they are only open 3 days a week and not for very long.

Victory Pig Pizza

Probably a couple other places that have "landmark" status like Abes Hot Dogs and Stookey's.

Welcome to Stookey's, The Home of Apple Wood Smoked Bar-B-Que!

If you wanted to try a specialty of the area get some Kiebasi, can't recommend a restaurant but Jerry's in Nanticoke makes a very good ring.

All of those are going to be a little bit of a drive from I-81 and wouldn't be worth it for most people so whether it's worth it really depends on whether it's something you're interested in.

Thanks! I'll check out Victory Pig and Jerry Son on the way back! I'll let you know what I think

Eddies place in Plains, PA. A lot of local color there and sassy waitresses in a 1950's steamliner diner setting. They have rice pudding and all the soups are made from scratch. They also have Pierogis and Potato Pancakes.... Its off the highway but still on the way north so your not backtracking. Its right across from the Mohegan Sun Casino. Its as much of a dive as you can get without it being gross and the food is legit. Its not really a landmark but EVERYONE has been there. I would get actual dinner there rather then a sandwich. Its homestyle and good. cash only....

Depending on where you are picking up 81, you should see where the What The Fork food truck is on that day and time.
