Does anyone else think that The Office has generated alot of unwarranted interest in the city of Scranton. Now I love The Office as much as any fan, but seriously, how much of the city actually plays into the show? The producers used it as nothing more than a (hate to say it, but) depressing backdrop to a funny environment. That's basically my take on it, does anyone agree with me that it's kind of ridiculous to use The Office as a basis for the city?

Sorry, but I don't see the Office as a negative at all. I don't live in NEPA any more, so I am always telling people thats where I am from. When they give me a strange look (they always do) I just say "its where the show Office takes place" and immediately, 9 out of 10 people know exactly what I am talking about.

And I think only us locals/natives are sensitive enough to feel that they are mocking us. Everyone else just think its s nice little, quiet town that's "not too far" from NYC.

I'm not talking about giving the city a bad rep, but nevermind.

I love The Office...that said.......they don't do us any favors by the way they depict 'Scrantonians'...and I get a little peeved when the scenery is not 'just right'...like they took a cruise on Lake Wallenpaupack in January...there were tons of light in the background...and the LAKE was not FROZEN!!! Also...they took a train to a convention somewhere!!! Where the flip is the TRAIN???????

I lived in Chicago for many years and I have seen many movies that were filmed there. None of the background is ever the way it really is. Thats just the way they do it !!!

Nah, on reflection it was a flat out dumb question.

The Office is great though, and I was born in Scranton.

If you think Office portrays Scranton bad, Dwight is supposed to be from Honesdale.

Really...I had heard him mention on the show that he lives on a beet farm "near Wilkes-Barre." A rural area near Wilkes-Barre....maybe Bear Creek? Although then there's the thing with him being a part-time Lackawanna County sheriff's deputy....would be strange if he lived in Luzerne County. Although they do a decent job plugging Scranton, I don't think their mission is to acurately portray Scranton....they just wanted a generic run of the mill town for the setting.
