Yeah, I was about to ask the same question until I saw the post date.

Though in general, and I see this a lot, you have to wonder why people who have a job way out in Maryland somewhere (Gaithersburg, Andrews AFB, Beltsville, etc.) get so amped up and insistent on living way out in the NoVa suburbs.

I'm not talking about the people who already live here and had their job changed and don't want to uproot their family. I'm talking about those who are either coming from another state, or just are randomly deciding to move out and actually have choices. As if Herndon or Centreville (and no offense to those areas) offer something special that no other place in the DC area could possibly match.

The person asking posted yesterday in this old thread. They didn't explain, but perhaps they already live in Burke and just got a job offer in Gaithersburg. Unless they come back there's no way to know.

I can't speak for anyone else, but this may become a reality for me in the next few years. In my case, I will need to care for elderly parents in Sterling and live with my sister in Herndon, but my company's office is in Gaithersburg. So there's no flexibility for me.

I can add that my wife has a second job in Rockville that we commute to once a week, whenever they need her. We thought she would quit that job when we moved here, but it looks like she has to hold on to it. So, we still make the commute between Ashburn and Rockville (not far from Gaithersburg). I guess we are in that situation, but, thankfully, it's not a 5 days per week thing for us.

I'm looking for some input on how traffic flows (or maybe doesn't flow?) on 267 and the beltway during the morning and evening rush hours. I am potentially looking at moving to Herndon/Reston/McLean and commuting to Gaithersburg, MD everyday, but I'm not sure if I'd be going with or against most of the traffic. I know the trip up I-270 in MD would be okay, so I'm mostly worried about 267 heading towards Tyson's Corner and the beltway between Tyson's Corner heading towards I-270 during the morning rush hour.

I know this whole area tends to be a mess so I'm probably not looking at a great commute anyway, but any suggestions/tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
I've been doing Tysons Corner to Silver Spring, MD for about 6 years. It's not the greatest, but it's manageable(approx. 45 minute average). Morning actually can be worse than evenings sometimes, which never used to be the case. This is because the 495 hot lanes create kind of a bottleneck where they end before the legion bridge. Mclean is very expensive, but that would help this commute IMMENSELY. Then you could get on 495 at Georgetown Pike and miss a lot of that backup. My home is pretty good for this commute, because I can be on the beltway in a matter of minutes, instead of spending a large chunk of time just getting on the beltway. You'll have this issue if you live in Herndon or Reston. After the Legion bridge it usually opens up and you'll head up 270 without much issue. Coming home can be hit or miss. Some days traffic moves pretty well and I'm home in 30-35 minutes. Some days there's an accident and it takes me almost an hour. On a really bad day it can even exceed an hour. Again, living in Mclean would help a lot because you could jump off the beltway right after crossing over the bridge, instead of having to fight to the tollroad.
