I'm still weighing optins on where to live when we move this summer. At 8am, what is the traffic like on the Toll Rd from Herndon/ Reston to Tysons? What abou Route 7 from Sterling?

Thanks

the traffic is horrible. I can't say how long that will take at 8am.

I have lived in oak hill and commuted to tyson's via ffx county pkway, to toll road, to route 7. I could make it in half an hour if i left at 6:45 on the dot.

I'd have to guess it would take roughly an hour from herndon/reston to get to tyson's at 8am. with no traffic on the weekend its about 20 minutes to tyson's on the toll road.

you could always commute early (6:30ish), then go to a gym at tyson's for an hour.

Herndon to the Tyson's corner exit on the toll road isn't too bad...you should be able to make it within 30 minutes on a good day. You will experience back-ups and 1 mile before you get off at the Tyson's corner exit, because of the toll booth. I would try taking both the toll road and Route 7 to see which works better for you.

I guess you would have to define what "good", "acceptable" and "horrible" is. For me, if you can make it there under 45 minutes, life is good. But there are some coworkers of mine that believe 30 minutes' commute is going to end the spark in their life and they complain about their commute every. single. morning. Personally, 30 minutes is not such a big deal for me to commute but in the end it is all up to your personal preferences.

as seldom said,
try both routes. The toll is usually a bit better and probably from Reston door to door 45-60. But they are going to be raing the toll again! Rt 7 is a give or take commute...somedays the traffic is all in sync with the traffic light Gods and you'd be there in 45 minutes. Then the next day you have to pay for your good foutune the day before and you hit every light! 60+minutes.

8am is a better time to leave than 7am.

evening commutes are worse than morning...people (esp those on a 8 hour clock) will get up early to beat the traffic (leaving at 6:30AM) but NOBODY wants to stay past 5-6pm. Traffic starts to get bad around 4:30 by 5:30 it's a mess!
