If you have a moment, my situation is a little tricky so looking for some direction.

I'm moving to VA from out of state. Right when I get there I will be buying a vehicle from a friend, which is an out of state vehicle.

For the first couple of months I will be living in a hotel so I won't really have proof of residence. Other than that, I will have Fed Govt (non-military) orders showing my place of work as DC Area but nothing specifically tying me to VA.

So my question is how exactly do I go about handling this?

-Buy the vehicle from my friend, transfer the title by hand/bill of sale.
-I'm pretty sure I can register the vehicle with my out of state license, however I still have to prove residency in VA which I'm not sure I can do.

Therefore, am I going to be stuck driving an unregistered vehicle? Or can the vehicle maintain its out of state registration for a couple of months despite my friend selling it to me?

Appreciate any insight.

Thanks

Since you mentioned orders, I'm assuming you're military. Maybe this page will shed some light on what you need to do: Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles

Thanks for your service!

I'm sorry, I didn't clarify that enough. No not military, fed govt employee.

Thanks

Yes
Then that is your permanent address and everything is done as if you still live there. You are basically on contract in another state. So the only one to notify is your insurance company for now.

Why go to a hotel? You can apartments with month to month tenantcies for less.

So just to verify I will be registering the vehicle using my out of state residency?

I will move into something more permanent but its just initially until a find a place. Its not out of pocket so it was the easiest option....

Thanks

correct. And following the old states rules. Leave your license alone. The only thing you have to worry about is split state income taxes.

Thanks for the help. As for the income taxes, thats a whole other issue.

One more dumb question as I just realized something else may not have been clear. The car will not have plates from my state but from a third state. So I'm assuming he will keep those and I would have to get VA plates, that won't be an issue either?

Appreciate it.

The car has to registered in your old home state until you have permanent residency. If they are paying for the hotel, then you are not a Virginia resident. You can be a temporary resident for up to 6 months.

As for taxes
