Looking for your input for some of the best things to do / places to go to in NoVa?

Some suggested categories (but please add your own). Please answer for categories in which you know a place that is among the best the region has to offer.

Best urban feeling downtown (dense / good dining / etc.), but within NoVa
Best all-round parks or playgrounds
Best walking or biking trails
Best skate park
Best icecream
Best coffee shop
Best restaurant in different categories
Best pub / bar
Best independent book store
...

Thanks!

The reasons I started this thread were:

(1) I have lived in the Atlanta metro for some years now. I recently saw a "Best of Atlanta" special of the local free-edition newspaper. I enjoyed visiting some of their suggestions. So even for existing residents, this info might be useful.

(2) Its usefulness for new residents will be immense.

May be we can "lower the standard" from "Best of ..." to "Your favorite ...".

My intention was to limit this to NoVa only. Not to include DC, because that info is probably more easily available elsewhere.

It's a matter of been there, done that. You can do a search for any one of those topics and find threads that already discuss which ones are the best.

You're covering a lot of bases there for one thread. You may also benefit from looking up the Washingtonian. Washingtonian Magazine - Dining and Restaurants, Shopping, Politics, Entertainment, Nightlife, Real Estate, News and Events in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia

I agree these can be found in other threads, so rather than go into any detail, I'll just give my quick answers. Admittedly, my list is heavily tilted to closer-in places, but only because I don't know as much about the further out places:

Honorable mention: Courthouse (Arlington)

Best all-round parks or playgrounds
Clemyjontri Park (McLean)

Tie: W&OD trail (Arlington to Purcellville), Mount Vernon Trail (Arlington to Mt. Vernon)

Best skate park
Hmmmm... no idea.

Best ice cream
