I have some family coming into town and they want to do some horseback riding. Can anybody recommend a place open to the public that lets people with limited experience ride their horses? Near Leesburg or Middleburg would be preferable, but we would be willing to drive somewhere too.

I don't think anyone will let you ride their own private horses, but I'd imagine there's gotta be some place that rents out horses with a guide.

Edit: sorry, the wording threw me off - Leesburg would probably be a good place to check. You can try Google; I can't recommend anywhere because in Middleburg (where I live) the horses (as far as I know) are privately owned.

I know of a good stable in Stanley (outside of Luray) but that might be too far. (?)

Here are some places in Winchester. It's an easy drive from Leesburg; about 40 minutes west and take Rte 7 West the whole way:

Magic Mountain Farm: http://magicmountainfarm.com/
The Rocking S Ranch: http://www.therockingsranch.com/
Wagon Wheel Ranch: http://www.yelp.com/biz/wagon-wheel-ranch-winchester

These places in Winchester board horses/stables. You may want to contact them to see if they provide riding:
Autumn Ridge Farm: http://www.autumnridgefarmllc.com/
Brindley Oaks Stable: www.brindleyoakstable.com

Here's one in Berryville:
Smith Field Farm: http://www.smithfieldfarm.com/activities.html

I'm sure there's some further south than us (i.e., Front Royal area). Have fun!
