Hello,

Can anyone tell me about the Dunn Loring section of Vienna?

How is it?

We are thinking of renting in this area but don't know much about it.

Any one have any info on the schools they are zoned for?

I work in Dunn Loring but don't live there so can't really address the schools but Fairfax County schools have a good reputation. It's a busy area but you're close to a lot to include Tysons Corner. It's got a mixture of nice and average homes. Lots of traffic in the surrounding area.

Dunn Loring is part of unincorporated Fairfax County. In other words, it doesn't have specific boundaries like a town on Long Island. It generally refers to areas off Gallows Road south of Route 7/Tysons and north of Lee Highway. There is a small zip code (22027) where the homes have Dunn Loring mailing addresses, but there also neighborhoods in the 22180 zip code of Vienna, outside the Town of Vienna, that people either refer to as Dunn Loring, including the Dunn Loring Woods subdivision.

I think the prior posts on Stenwood ES ought to give you a feel for the area. It's a mix of older, stable residential neighborhoods from the 1960s and newer properties, some quite expensive. It's very convenient to Tysons and there's also a Whole Foods and Trader Joe's nearby. Some parts are very close to the Capital Beltway and/or Route 66, which some people don't like. The W&OD bike trail also runs through Dunn Loring, which is great for biking or jogging into the Town of Vienna or nearby Falls Church (or for longer trips if desired). There are some nice swim clubs close by as well. There is a very small area of old victorian houses, but for the most part this is late 20th century suburbia - no charming town centers as in older Mid-Atlantic suburbs or New England towns.

With respect to schools, you always need to check the specific address on the "boundary locator" FCPS web site. For the most part, it will be Stenwood or Cunningham Park ES, Thoreau or Kilmer MS, and Marshall HS. Those are generally considered very good schools, although Cunningham Park (which students who live in the Cedar Park garden apartment complex in the Town of Vienna also attend) was included by FCPS on a list of "priority schools" several years ago based on lagging test scores. My impression is that this has not dissuaded people who live in nearby areas from sending their kids there, and FCPS schools are generally very good, but it's not as highly ranked as the other schools.
