One of my (NYC) inlaws to my wife
"So, where did you get that skirt?"

Wife
"I picked it up at the Pentagon"

Inlaw
"You can get clothes at the Pentagon?"

See, I think most people would say, "I picked it up at Pentagon" (leaving out the "the"). If someone said they "picked it up at the Pentagon", I, too, would think they've purchased some military garb.

Unfortunately, I would have asked the same questions as the in-law did and I live here.

"Want to metro there?"

Are we going to be wearing glittery clothing like the fads of the early 2000s?

My daughter did a summer program in DC and there were kids from all over the country. At one point a girl from Wisconsin looked at an ATM and said "Wow! Chevy Chase has his own bank?"

Woodward & Lothrop operated a dress shop on the Pentagon Concourse from the very earliest days of the building until the early '90s...when the whole Woodie's chain went belly up. I dare say a LOT of skirts were sold in the Pentagon during those 50 years.

I'm trying to think if anything replaced it...don't think so, but I've been outta there over 10 years now...

If I tell my Maryland friends that I took the parkway to Reston, they assume I'm talking about the GW Pkwy. When I tell them it's the Fairfax County Pkwy and they have no idea what I'm talking about.

I used to shop at the Pentagon when I was a kid (8?). I bought gum, maple-sugar candy (still love that stuff), and - the biggest purchase I ever made - a baseball glove for $4 - used that sucker for years.

I also frequently went into the middle of the place to the Gazebo that used to (?) be there and buy something like Italian ice. Looking at Satellite view of Google Maps I see that SOMETHING is still there in the center of the Pentagon.

The earliest 60's were a different time and rather more laid back than now. I was, of course, an Army brat living at South Fort Myer at the time and would often go there or bike ride through Arlington Cemetery (and now that I type that, I remember biking through the cemetery and stopping to see Kennedy give a talk there - probably on Veteran's Day).
