I need some recommendations for a local bank with locations throughout Fairfax and Prince William. I don't want to pay any fees for services other than buying checks. Online banking is a must. Are credit unions good alternatives?

Burke & Herbert. Yes, I like my credit Union.

Well I use Navy Federal CU, but membership restrictions apply. Other local Credit Unions that anyone can join are (require joining an organization for a small fee or associated by employer):
Pentagon Federal CU
Congressional Federal CU
State Department FCU

I only bank with credit unions.

I am eligible to join Apple FCU.

I have been with Bank of America forever. I have an account where if you *don't* use a teller and do all your banking through an ATM (and online) then there are no fees, no matter what the balance.

I rarely if ever bank in person, that's why somewhere with widespread ATMs is a must.

I'm with Capital One. They bought Chevy Chase Bank so they have locations all over DC/MD/VA including the airports. Very convenient. I pay no fees, but I also have multiple accounts that I group together so the minimum balance isn't an issue. They do online bill pay and have an app for a smartphone (I'm not comfortable using this personally). I've been with them so long I'm just too lazy to switch to a CU.

I haven't heard too many positive reviews of Apple from coworkers...

We have accounts through USAA (all online) and Bank of America (for the few times we need to see a person)

I formerly banked with Apple FCU and I closed my accounts as I was not really happy with them.

I also recommend Digital Federal Credit Union and Alliant Credit Union. They are not local but offer very friendly interfaces and of course access to the co-op network.

I am a member of Apple FCU via my educator fianceé. We've been generally satisfied though I'm sorry to read of AmyinNOVA's dissatisfaction. Then again, we rarely need to visit a branch. I don't know if this is typical of other credit unions but Apple does reimburse your non-Apple ATM fees up to a certain amount every month.
