Is anyone successfully monitoring Virginia State Police (Fairfax Division) Radio Traffic as of 2/20/2014? If so, what type of scanner are you using and what is the dispatch frequency?

I listened to police channels for over 30 years. So done with that.

Yes, but the OP is asking to listen to your ilk, not BE your ilk.

In the not-that-distant-past there used to be an online "scanner" that allowed listening in to snippets of Fairfax et al police.

WAITAMINUTE! I just checked and it's back!

Fairfax Police et al Scanner

This isn't Virginia State Police but the same site may have that, too - note that some police comms are encrypted now so perhaps your search may not be fruitful.

A few months ago I was stuck in traffic on 95, like a dead stop for 20-30 minutes, with police cars speeding up the shoulder. I searched and searched but couldn't find any police scanner apps that would work so I could figure what the heck was going on. Oh well.

For easy mobile listening, I like the "Scanner Radio" app available on both the Apple and Android app stores. Fairfax Fire/EMS, and Police are available. The Chicago feed is intense, 24/7. As far as reliablility, I've never found any of the streams via the app to be down.

The State Police have moved over to STARS, the Virginia statewide radio system. You'll need a trunking scanner to listen.
I use radioreference.com for scanner frequencies. Here is their VA STARS page:

I have a high school boy on my bus that told me he has a scanner that he listens to the school bus frequencies on. He's always asking me to translate some of the jargon used.

He's a nice kid, but strange...very strange. He should be out chasing girls, not listening to that stuff!

1. The FFX Police scanner has been back for at least two months.

2. There is a scanner feed for the VSP in our area. It popped up a few days ago: Virginia State Police - Fairfax Division
