I need to get new lenses for my glasses. I'm not sure yet if I'll get two glasses (one for reading and one for distance or progressives). The doctor told me Kaiser is very expensive and recommended getting glasses from COSTCO or Sam's Club (you don't need membership here). Where do you get your prescription eye glasses?

I highly recommend Costco, but you do need a membership.

I recommend For Eyes (For Eyes Optical : Home).

Walmart, Fair Lakes.

Used to go to Costco but they stopped accepting our vision insurance (Spectera? Univision? United Health? I forget). We've used others as well.

Our prescriptions USUALLY are written by an opthamologist down in Falls Church (Oshinsky), though most recently my daughter just used the optometrist at Walmart to do that.

As an aside - I believe all the ones we've used for the glasses themselves (not the prescription) out-source the production to a lab specializing in that - and "the lab" =easily= could be the same one for all...

I was also thinking about getting a new pair of glasses and wondered about where to go to. Costco doesn't seem to take my provider (Aetna) and I do have the other usual choices (Walmart, Lenscrafters, JCPenney/Sears/Target Optical, For Eyes, Drs May & Hettler, etc).

Drs May & Hettler appears to be a local chain here in Northern VA so I was thinking about going there. Any opinions about their service compared to the others?

Thanks in advance.

Costco. They don't accept our insurance but we can submit the receipts for out-of-plan ourselves. Most frames at Costco are under $59. Progressive bifocal lenses (for a child, so they were a strong lenses) were $109. We found them about 65% cheaper than the eye doctor. And you can try the frames on.

I get my regular glasses from my neighborhood optometrist, but I ordered prescription sunglasses from Zenni Optical for less than $30, and they have been great. (I have VSP, which covers my regular glasses, but I didn't want to pay hundreds out-of-pocket for sunglasses. If I didn't have VSP, I would definitely try Zenni.)

Wal Mart but the eye plan I have wasn't accepted there. I got a prescription written by my eye Dr then went to wal mart. I hate the store itself but liked saving the money on the glasses. I got their higher dollar glasses cheaper than any eyeglass stores cheapest ones.

Why is that - I've heard many express negative things about Walmart but, for THIS not-filthy-rich consumer's POV, Walmart has pretty darn good variety and usually at prices that cannot be beat.

I just end up recycling my frames over and over because I don't care for the frames in these stores anyways.
