This is more of a media problem than a meteorology problem. In reality, the forecasts were pretty decent. Maybe a little overdone in the Chicago area, but around here there was a pretty decent chance for severe weather, and it turns out that a tornado moved through Montgomery County and tore a lot of stuff up. Derechos are like hurricanes, where there is going to be a very large damage swath. Basically every other severe weather event is going to have small areas that are highly intense, but the broader region will be minimally affected. The forecast was not for a derecho, but the media hyped up the cluster of storms as one.
