I would stay away from that area. Try going west to the Manassas area or North to the Lake Ridge or even western Woodbridge/Dale City area. You would be going against traffic during rush hour and it's much nicer area.

Safe Apartments -- Virginia Commons -- Dumfries
The easiest way to check out whether a community is nice and safe is to ask the local police department about calls to the community. I live at Virginia Commons and went through this exercise before I moved in. Triangle is not so great but Virginia Commons is about 3 miles north of Triangle -- the apartment is on the border of Dumfries and Woodbridge. Also, drive by a night to see what is going on. Nice quiet and safe at VA Commons -- you will see their patrol guy driving around.
